At Casterton Primary Academy, we love taking part in a range of sporting activities and developing our physical literacy skills in PE.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we combine the delivery of basic movement patterns (such as running, jumping, catching and throwing), continual rehearsal of our ABC’s (agility, balance and co-ordination) and also strive to embed life skills such as problem solving, communication, teamwork and sharing.
During Key Stage 1, we move onto the Physical Education curriculum and provide opportunities for our pupils to continue to master basic movement patterns and ABC’s acquired in the EYFS. The children then learn to apply those skills into a range of activities, including team games. Pupils will also take part in gymnastics and dance, encouraging the exploration of their bodies in terms of shape, movement patterns, spatial changes and loadings; all of which benefit motor-skill development, fitness and psychosocial skills.
In Key Stage 2, we continue our physical journey using movement patterns, now studied in isolation and in combination, and there are numerous opportunities to play competitive and modified games. Pupils are now encouraged to recognise and evaluate their own (and others) success, compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Gymnastics, dance, outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA), and athletics also feature during these years to aid the development of flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
Throughout all areas of PE at Casterton Primary Academy we actively seek to develop the 5 C’s; competence, confidence, competition, collaboration and communication! We hope that a positive experience of Physical Education will encourage all our children to lead healthy and active lives.
We have a variety of sports clubs that run throughout the academic year, which cater for pupils actively seeking competition and sport-specific development (e.g. football, netball, tag-rugby and cricket). In addition, we offer clubs that cater for pupils wishing to participate for fun and enjoyment (e.g. multi-skills, Ultimate Frisbee and Dodgeball).
Our sports ambassadors have been chosen for their fantastic contributions to support across school. They support Mr Dutton in further developing our sports clubs and provision, as well as providing opportunities for pupil voice from all year groups.
We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded the platinum award from School Games. We are one of only 6 schools in Burnley to receive this level and had to achieve four yard of the gold award, to then be eligible to progress to platinum. Well done to everyone who has taken part in PE lessons and after school clubs.
